Is capital punishment an effective deterrent to murder in the usa
Was asked this by a student today . Said no. But is there hard evidence on this?

Good point.

Perhaps this could be the new 'ultimate deterrent'? Locked in a room with Morgan for an hour?

If you are of a mind to take a life in pre-meditation then it matters not that it is supposed to be a deterrent as it did not deter you.

It is a suitable punishment for taking of a life.

This biggest deterrent to murder in the USA is getting incarcerated for life and subsequently being interviewed by Piers Morgan.

Of course if I had, I'm sure my IQ would instantly plummet to that of a typical American, and I would be seized by the need to seek fierce retribution from said toerag, insisting that only an eye for an eye was good enough justice for me.

As we know, this always solves everything.

The third 'season' of Serial is now out, and it will deal with the US justice system, including three strikes, multiple life sentences, capital punishment, impact of race on sentencing and so on. The Serial team recorded stories in Cleveland courthouse over a year. Some of you might like it.

And of course if you can afford to pay for a defence attorney, rather than have a shit one appointed by the state, then the prosecution don't ask for first degree murder.
It's a modern form of lynching pure and simple

Definitely, nobody ever gets murdered in USA

I just think they need more guns and then everyone living there will be so much safer.

Don't see how that matters. Vengeance is a very primitive human trait that religions exploit to the limit, and often beyond. An eye for an eye, anyone?

As much as I find much human behaviour abhorrent, I don't want to be dragged down to that level, either directly or "on my behalf"/"in my name", should such activity impinge on my life.

I would rather "life" meant "life", not just a few years, when it comes to incarceration for such crimes. That's all a bit too Humpty Dumpty to me.

I'm not particularly bothered if such a stance has a negative human rights impact on the quality of life of such criminals, or kills all hope of release they may have - they can spend some of that time "qualifying" the life/lives they snuffed out, and maybe work out a solution themselves.

The death of any american citizen has to be seen as a positive

Not many states have capital punishment. It is a state, rather than a federal decision

One thing about capital punishment is that the recidivism rate is zero.

Yeah but what if you execute the wrong person, what happens to the recidivism rate then?

the 3 strike rule
and Joint Enterprise are both equally fucked up laws in that country

the penal/legal system out there simply does not believe in rehabilitation - which can be interpreted as more Jim Crow bullshit racist law as it affects more blacks than white

Whether it's a deterrent or not isn't really the point. It's about paying the ultimate price - an eye for an eye.

Prison isn't an effective deterrent for a large amount of people

Re: Is capital punishment an effective deterrent to murder in the usa
If you base a decision on the amount of people who are shot and killed each day, the answer is no.

Re the cost thing.

Not necessarily the same everywhere, but the way the US goes about it means that it is a lot more expensive to execute somebody than keep them in prison indefinitely, mostly due to the very long and complicated judicial process that has to be followed to execute somebody.

One estimate in California proposed that to execute one prisoner, cost at least 18x what it cost on average to keep an inmate in prison for the rest of their life.

So, if it's just the cost, simply chase down the relatives of the convicted to recover the money needed. Go up and down the family tree as often as needed.

YOUR fault entirely if it turns out you're a (distant) relative of a convict serving a life sentence.

Fair, no?
